Chapter twelve

Iwas hot on the tail of one of those flying raptors when it suddenly put its body in a vertical position and opened its wings to their full extent, which made it lose most of its speed. The damned thing looked like it was hanging in the air. I barely managed not to crash into it but ended up overshooting it, which was the next worst thing.

“What the frak!” I yelled.

“I think that was the monsters’ equivalent of a Cobra Maneuver,” suggested Cordi.

Now the monster was on my six, throwing projectiles at me. Some of them flashed dangerously close. I ground my teeth in frustration at being outsmarted by a mindless beast and put my Viper in a power dive. The Gryphon came after me and kept shooting those blazing balls, a few of which dug smoldering holes in my beloved Viper. A red warning light started to wink for attention, but I didn’t have the time to check and see what had been damaged.

Never in my worst nightmares had I imagined being chased by a flying raptor from hell!

Then a Sparrow hit the monster dead center. A bright explosion shredded it into tiny flaming bits, not even big enough to make steak.

I looked at my tactical display to find out who’d fired the shot and was delighted to see it was Liz. “Thanks, honey,” I told her, “for watching my back.”

“Behind every not-dead fighter pilot, there’s a—” Liz started quoting one of my own books; then she screamed, “Jim, look at the portal!”

I did. Then my jaw dropped as the logical part of my brain tried to convince the caveman part of my brain that what I was seeing was nothing but a weird hallucination.

It was difficult to describe what was coming out of the portal. It looked and moved like an eel, if said eel was the size of Godzilla, could fly without wings, and didn’t have eyes—which somehow made it look more terrifying. The creature had massive fangs protruding from its giant mouth and dripping with venom and was covered from head to tail with hard, thick scales with metallic luster that looked a whole lot like impenetrable plated armor to me. It trailed a stream of flesh, thorns, and bones, all covered with that armor, for at least half a mile. Part demon, part lizard, all pure, white, mad terror, and I knew with absolute certainty that even if I survived this, I would’ve lost sleep for at least a month.

“And we thought the dragon was bad,” said Liz. “This thing is ten times bigger.”

I gasped, my heart jumping up and down in my chest, my mouth dry all of a sudden, my brain unable to digest the massiveness of the monster swimming out of the portal. “What the frak is that?”

“I think it’s a Shadowserpent,” said Karaat, his voice tense. “Or at least it looks exactly like one.”

“It’s a what?” I asked, bewildered.

“It’s a mythical creature,” he explained. “The closest thing we have to you humans’ dragons.
